Our Curriculum
At the Anglo-Portuguese School of London, our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop confidence and give every child the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to flourish.
As a bilingual and bicultural school, our curriculum reflects our international outlook while providing children with a strong foundation in the English and Portuguese languages, a deep understanding of different cultures and a genuine sense of belonging.
A Spiral Curriculum
Our curriculum follows a spiral approach, ensuring that important knowledge, concepts and skills are revisited regularly throughout a child's time at school.
Rather than learning something once and then moving on, children return to key ideas at different stages of their education. Each time they revisit a concept, they build on what they already know, deepen their understanding and encounter increasing levels of challenge.
For example, children may first learn to identify and describe geographical features before returning to these ideas later to compare environments, interpret maps, analyse geographical data and consider how people interact with the world around them.
This approach helps children to:
- Build secure and lasting knowledge
- Connect new learning with previous experiences
- Strengthen their understanding through regular retrieval and practice
- Develop increasingly sophisticated skills
- Identify and correct misconceptions
- Become confident in applying what they know to new situation
Our teachers carefully sequence learning so that each year builds upon the foundations established previously. This creates a coherent learning journey from the Early Years through the primary years.
A Broad and Balanced Curriculum
Our curriculum provides children with a rich breadth of learning across the primary years.
Alongside the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, children develop their knowledge and skills through:
- Portuguese Language and Culture
- History
- Geography
- Art and Design
- Design and Technology
- Computing
- Music
- Physical Education
- Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education
- Religious Education
- Additional language learning, where appropriate
Subjects are carefully planned to ensure that children develop both subject-specific
knowledge and the ability to make meaningful connections across their learning.
Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
We believe that knowledge is the foundation upon which skills and understanding are built.
Children are taught the essential knowledge they need while being encouraged to question, explore, explain and apply what they have learned. Through our spiral curriculum, key knowledge is revisited and strengthened over time, helping children move from initial understanding towards greater independence and mastery.
Our classrooms provide opportunities for discussion, investigation, collaboration, creativity and problem-solving. Children are encouraged to think deeply, make connections and learn from mistakes.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We believe that some of the most powerful learning takes place beyond the classroom.
Educational visits, workshops, performances, sporting activities, cultural experiences and community projects enrich our curriculum and give children opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts.
Our location in London provides an exceptional learning resource, with access to museums, galleries, parks, historical sites and cultural institutions. Our connections with Portuguese culture and heritage further enrich children's experiences and provide opportunities to explore the language and traditions of the Portuguese-speaking world.
Preparing Children for the Future
Our children are growing up in an increasingly connected and changing world. We want them to leave our school with more than a collection of facts. We want them to have the knowledge, skills, confidence and adaptability to continue learning throughout their lives.
Our spiral curriculum provides secure foundations while encouraging children to think critically, communicate effectively, solve problems and approach new experiences with curiosity and optimism.
Our Curriculum Promise
At the Anglo-Portuguese School of London, we want every child to experience a curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive, enriching and joyful.
We want our pupils to develop a lifelong love of learning, a strong sense of identity and pride in their bilingual and bicultural heritage, and the confidence to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
Two languages. Two cultures. One rich educational journey.
